In the last two decades or so, Ecuador has become a top birding and wildlife watching destination, rivaling Costa Rica as the best country in the Neotropics for bird photography.
Like in Costa Rica, the concept of Eco-lodge has been developed and refined to offer a great wildlife watching experience in gardens and properties where wild birds and animals are encouraged to approach, by setting up feeders and creating a safe environment free of disturbance and threats; something relatively easy to accomplish that is however very difficult to find elsewhere. The highland forests of Mindo and Tandayapa in particular have become world-famous destinations to see and photograph some of the most spectacular hummingbird species in South America. Lodges like Tandayapa, San Isidro, Guango… have become a must to any serious photographer wanting to get images of hummingbirds and other forest birds in beautiful settings.
