The Common or Small-spotted Genet (Genetta genetta) is believed to have been introduced by the Arabs into the Iberian Peninsula, probably as a mouse-hunting house pet. It has colonized almost every wooded habitat in Spain, up to an altitude of 1,800 m. It is an extremely efficient predator of small and medium-sized prey, from rabbits to corvids; birds are mostly hunted at night while they sleep. It is equally proficient hunting on trees and on the ground.
